About this position
Environmental Laboratory research opportunity in aquatic plant ecology and management at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory, part of the U.S. Department of Defense research enterprise.
The project centers on aquatic plant management science, with a strong emphasis on plant ecology, invasive species ecology and management, and insect-plant interactions. The selected student will work under the guidance of a mentor and contribute to research on chemical and biological control of insect or weed pests. The work may include studying environmental tolerances of invasive pests, improving the use of host-specific insect herbivores for managing environmental weeds, developing new use-patterns for pesticides against invasive species, examining the role of genetic diversity in large-scale plant invasions, and supporting classical biological control and integrated pest management approaches.
The position is embedded in a broader Environmental Laboratory research environment that includes ecosystem science and technology, environmental resiliency, environmental sensing, ecological modeling and forecasting, risk and decision science, sustainable materials, systems biology, climate change, computational chemistry, environmental chemistry, and environmental security. The student may also gain experience working with a diverse scientific team on related topics such as contaminant fate and transport through trophic interactions, plant disease-vector dynamics, forest pest management, experimental design, and statistical modeling.
The appointment is based in Lewisville, Texas, and is described as a full-time twelve-month research appointment with potential extension depending on project and funding conditions.
