About this position

Assistant Professor (post-doc) position at the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, within the Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Warsaw, Poland.

This is a funded research position in a project titled How changes in meristem patterning drive evolutionary innovations: insights from syncephalia in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), led by Dr Jakub Baczyński and funded by the National Science Center Poland. The project explores how complex, flower-like inflorescences evolve in Asteraceae and how changes in meristem activity generate morphological innovation and structural complexity in plants.

The research combines comparative genomics, developmental transcriptomics, in situ analyses of gene expression, and, where feasible, functional approaches. The topic is highly relevant to researchers interested in plant evo-devo, meristem biology, developmental genetics, and the evolution of plant form.

The successful candidate will conduct research within the project, publish in international peer-reviewed journals, seek additional research funding, and contribute to academic teaching duties as required by the University of Warsaw. The role is a full-time temporary contract starting 1 January 2027 for 12 months, with the possibility of extension for another 12 months.

Funding and salary: the post is supported by the National Science Center Poland. The base salary is approximately 8,700 PLN gross per month, plus a 13th-month salary and a seniority allowance.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD in biological sciences or a related discipline, have strong publication records, international experience, excellent English, and relevant expertise in plant developmental biology or evolutionary comparative genomics/transcriptomics. The University of Warsaw must be the primary place of employment.

How to apply: submit the required documents by email to the project PI and the Faculty Dean’s Office before 30 September 2026. Required documents include the personal questionnaire and a motivation letter with a description of scientific interests and a research activity plan. Interviews are expected in early October 2026, and results will be communicated by email by 31 October 2026.
