About this position
CDTnet PhD Fellowship F4 at Oslo University Hospital (The Intervention Centre) is a funded doctoral position focused on computational modelling for improved assessment of diastolic function from echocardiography.
The project addresses a major clinical challenge in heart failure: many key contributors to diastolic dysfunction, such as myocardial stiffness, impaired relaxation, and elevated filling pressures, cannot be measured directly with current non-invasive methods. The doctoral candidate will combine clinically acquired echocardiographic measurements with patient-specific digital twin technology to build mathematical models that estimate underlying physiological and mechanical properties of the heart.
Research activities include collection and analysis of animal and clinical datasets, including echocardiographic studies with simultaneously recorded invasive pressure measurements. These data will be used to develop, calibrate, and validate modelling approaches for more accurate and clinically useful diagnosis and monitoring of heart failure. The project also offers opportunities to explore emerging ultrasound modalities such as blood speckle tracking (BST), with potential applications in assessing intracardiac flow dynamics, intraventricular pressure gradients, energy loss, and flow vortices.
The fellowship is part of the Horizon Europe MSCA / Marie Curie-funded CDTnet project (Grant Agreement 101312147). Planned secondments include King’s College London (2 months) for training in advanced cardiac digital twin and heart modelling technologies, and Maastricht University (1 month) for training in the CircAdapt cardiovascular modelling platform and model personalisation methods.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Cybernetics, Electrical Engineering, Informatics, Physics, Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technology, or a related field. A strong academic record is required, along with excellent English skills. Experience with Python, MATLAB, mathematical modelling, computational mechanics, data science, or biomedical data analysis is advantageous. The role is interdisciplinary and suited to candidates interested in cardiovascular physiology, echocardiography, computational medicine, and experimental or clinical research.
Application is via the Webcruiter portal. The deadline is 30 September 2026.

What's required
Applicants should hold a Master's degree or equivalent in Cybernetics, Electrical Engineering, Informatics, Physics, Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technology, or a related discipline. A strong academic record is required with a weighted average grade of B or higher. Experience with scientific programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or similar languages) is advantageous. Knowledge of mathematical modelling, computational mechanics, or data science is considered an advantage. Interest in cardiovascular physiology, echocardiography, medical technology, or computational medicine is desirable. Experience with experimental, pre-clinical, or clinical research, including data collection, validation studies, or analysis of biomedical data, is an advantage. Previous research experience, including publications, conference presentations, or research projects, is beneficial. Excellent written and oral English skills are required. Candidates must not have lived or worked in Norway for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must be eligible to enrol in the PhD programme at the University of Oslo.
