About this position
Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) is offering a research fellowship within the Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine Directorate. The opportunity is designed to provide mentorship, collaboration, and hands-on exposure to multidisciplinary research that supports advances in military medicine.
The fellowship centers on ongoing projects in combat casualty care and operational medicine, including the testing and evaluation of blood products, resuscitative adjuncts, and biological countermeasures for combat-related injuries. The research also examines biological mechanisms associated with combat trauma, directed energy exposure, extreme environmental stressors, and toxicant exposure. The setting emphasizes experimental science and practical laboratory work across physiological and cell-based platforms.
Participants will work in a collaborative research environment and gain experience in experimental design and execution, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and scientific presentation. The appointment also offers exposure to laboratory operations such as maintaining physiological and cell culture instrumentation, applying quality assurance and quality control practices, refining standard operating procedures, and contributing to new data collection and analysis approaches for emerging technologies.
Research activities may also include preparing proposals, reports, presentations, and manuscripts, with opportunities to engage with the wider scientific community through conferences when appropriate. The position is based at NAMRU-SA, part of the U.S. Navy research network under the Department of Defense.
