About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of Warwick (WMG) in lithium-ion batteries, with a focus on lithium plating diagnostics, X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering, and small-angle scattering.
This project addresses one of the most dangerous failure mechanisms in lithium-ion batteries: metallic lithium plating under aggressive cycling conditions. The successful candidate will develop a quantitative, non-destructive, in-situ diagnostic methodology to distinguish lithium plating from normal intercalation in industry-relevant cell formats.
The research will begin with single-layer pouch cells and extend to larger formats. You will investigate plating triggers such as cycling rate, N:P electrode capacity ratio, and low-temperature operation, generating data that can improve safe operating windows, battery management systems, and physics-based degradation models.
The project is based at WMG and the Battery Scale-up Facility, with access to major international facilities including the Diamond Light Source and the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source. Training includes advanced diffraction and scattering methods, lithium-ion electrochemistry, and close collaboration with beamline scientists and industrial partners.
This is a full-time PhD studentship for UK students. The advert notes additional support of £2,000 per year for training and consumables, plus access to a Faraday Institution PhD Training Programme valued at approximately £5,000 per year.
Deadline: 31 August 2026.
