Doctoral Candidate (DC) / PhD Position (m/f/x): Laser-Beam Micromachining for Manufacturing of Moulds for Bio-Analytical Devices Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany

Chemnitz University of Technology is offering a fully funded Doctoral Candidate (DC) / PhD position in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Professorship Micromanufacturing Technology. The project is part of the MicroMan4Health doctoral network and is titled “Laser Beam Micromachining for Point-of-Care Diagnostic Moulds”.

The PhD project focuses on laser-beam micromachining for manufacturing moulds for bio-analytical devices, especially point-of-care (POC) diagnostic parts. Research topics include developing advanced laser machining strategies, building a software-supported framework to predict and optimise laser-material interactions, analysing beam-surface interactions, and modelling how pulse characteristics affect accuracy and surface quality. The work aims to deliver reliable ablation datasets, validated laser-scanning optimisation strategies, and a robust process-design methodology for high-quality POC mould production.

The position is supervised by Prof. Dr. Andreas Schubert and is embedded in an international network of 15 doctoral candidate positions across universities and research institutes in Europe and the United States. The network emphasises data-centric micromanufacturing for next-generation healthcare and MedTech applications, and includes secondments to industrial and academic partners for validation and round-robin testing.

This is a 3-year, full-time, 100% funded position with salary and allowances according to the MSCA Doctoral Networks rules, funded through Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement No. 101312169). The role is intended for further scientific qualification and includes enrolment in the doctoral student programme at Chemnitz University of Technology.

Applicants should have a completed Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Production Engineering, or a closely related science/engineering field. The call also asks for experience with experimental research, very good English, and strong motivation for interdisciplinary and international collaboration. MSCA mobility conditions apply: candidates must not have lived in Germany for more than 12 months in the three years before October 2026 and must not already hold a PhD.
