About this position

A PhD position in Evolutionary Genomics is available in the group of Henrik Kaessmann at Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany. The project is part of a highly collaborative research environment at the ZMBH and is focused on major questions in the origins and molecular evolution of organs in mammals and other vertebrates.

The lab’s research emphasizes the evolution of gene expression and its regulatory basis, using extensive comparative genomics resources such as single-cell RNA-seq and ATAC-seq across species. Current and future projects may combine experimental and computational work, including cutting-edge approaches such as long-read spatial transcriptomics, advanced bioinformatics, AI and deep learning, and functional follow-up in organoid and mouse models. The group also supports CRISPR-based approaches and synthetic genomics through the local Center for Synthetic Genomics.

Projects can span diverse organs and tissues, from the brain to the gonads, and may address the evolution of protein-coding genes, alternative splicing, long noncoding RNAs, microRNAs, and sex chromosomes, together with their phenotypic consequences. The specific project will be developed with the successful candidate according to their interests, expertise, and skills.

Applicants should be highly motivated and enthusiastic, with a strong interest in evolutionary biology and a clear aptitude for experimental molecular/genomics work, computational/bioinformatics analysis, or both. The position is offered for 3 years with possible extension, and the working language is English. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

To apply, submit a CV, a statement of research interests, and the names and contact details of three references to Henrik Kaessmann at [email protected]. More information about the lab and institute can be found on the linked research and institute webpages.
