About this position

Doctoral Position in High Intensity Electron Sources for Future Accelerators at ETH Zurich / Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland.

This PhD project sits at the intersection of accelerator physics, electron sources, beam shaping, laser optics, RF technology, and beam diagnostics. The research group at PSI develops technologies for future accelerator facilities, including high-intensity particle sources, high-gradient accelerators, and diagnostics for sub-femtosecond beam measurements. The position is based at PSI Villigen with teaching assistant duties at ETH Zurich.

The project focuses on developing electron sources for future accelerator facilities and PSI’s contributions to the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Key tasks include commissioning a new electron source test stand, demonstrating pulse-to-pulse modulation of bunch charge, beam size, and laser pulse energy, comparing laser-shaping techniques, building a prototype for photocathode operation, and exploring machine-learning/AI-based optimization. The work also includes studying photocathode and laser performance, including semiconductor photocathode lifetime at bunch charges up to 5 nC, and measuring beam-brightness gains relevant to a SwissFEL+ upgrade.

Eligibility: a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, accelerator science, electrical engineering, photonics, or a closely related field. Strong interest in experimental accelerator work is important; experience with beam dynamics, lasers/optics, numerical modelling, or scientific programming is an advantage. English proficiency is required, and German is beneficial.

Funding and conditions: this is a doctoral position with enrollment in the ETH Doctoral Programme and teaching/mentoring opportunities. The post is fixed-term; no stipend amount is specified in the posting.

How to apply: submit the application online only as a single merged PDF including a cover letter, CV, English transcripts for all degrees, three professional reference contacts (with email and direct phone number), and a publication or thesis sample. Applications by email or post are not accepted. Questions about the position should be directed to Dr. Thomas Lucas at [email protected].
