About this position
Graduate School of East Asian Studies (GEAS) at Freie Universität Berlin offers a structured PhD programme focused on East Asia, with research centred on China, Japan, and Korea.
The programme is designed for researchers working across area studies, social sciences, history, anthropology, business and economics, or legal studies. It combines a three-year course phase with a one-year writing phase, giving doctoral researchers a four-year framework for developing and presenting their work.
GEAS provides a research-oriented environment with annual interdisciplinary colloquia, seminars, summer schools, and research projects. Doctoral researchers interact with faculty, other researchers, and international guests, and the school also welcomes visiting academics and professional fellows with East Asia expertise.
The programme emphasises both subject-specific and professional development. Researchers can take part in social and cultural studies training, on-demand language training, research stay preparation workshops, and East Asia-specific research ethics training. Progress is reviewed in the first year and again after the second year through papers and presentations in public symposia before the writing phase begins.
Doctoral candidates are also supported by Dahlem Research School through transferable-skills training, including research integrity, project management, writing, networking, career advice, and coaching. The broader university environment includes career services and international student support.

What's required
Applicants should have a strong academic background for doctoral study in East Asian Studies and related fields such as area studies, social sciences, history, anthropology, business and economics, or legal studies. The programme is taught entirely in English, so applicants need sufficient English for doctoral research; a basic understanding of everyday German is highly recommended. The advert also indicates that German language courses are available through the graduate schools and the FU language centre.
