About this position

Tampere University is offering a funded doctoral researcher position in computational biophysics within the newly established BioInterfaces group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. The project focuses on membrane proteins, especially lipid scramblases, combining high-throughput coarse-grained and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, biasing techniques, constant-pH simulations, protein design, and the development of an online database.

The successful candidate will work closely with the group leader and a postdoctoral research fellow, and will also benefit from collaborations with experimental partners. Typical tasks include running and analyzing simulations, contributing to manuscript preparation, and presenting results at meetings and conferences. There may also be some contribution to teaching activities in the unit.

The position is hosted by Tampere University in Finland, in a dynamic research environment with strong links to the Computational Physics laboratory and access to exceptional supercomputing resources through CSC–IT Center of Science. The wider group spans biophysics, quantum matter, complex systems, novel materials, nanostructures, electronic structure, and interdisciplinary medical and physiological technologies.

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in physics, chemistry, biosciences, or a related field. Experience with molecular dynamics software such as GROMACS and basic programming skills such as Python are preferred. Skills in simulation/analysis tool development, protein design with AI tools, or machine learning on simulation data are considered major advantages. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

The appointment is for 3 years, corresponding to the expected duration of PhD studies, and starts in late 2026 or early 2027. The position includes a typical starting salary of around 3000 EUR/month under the Finnish University Salary System. The role is intended for doctoral study, and the successful candidate will enrol in a doctoral programme.

Applications must be submitted through Tampere University’s online recruitment system by 2026-09-15. Required documents include a CV with publication list, contact information for 1–2 referees, and a motivation letter (maximum 2 pages). All application materials must be in English and uploaded as PDF files.
