The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is offering a PhD position within the Climate Nexus Convention initiative. The successful candidate will join the Environmental Cheminformatics (ECI) group, led by Professor Emma Schymanski, at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB). The ECI group specializes in identifying unknown chemicals and assessing their impact on human health, utilizing high resolution mass spectrometry, cheminformatics, and scalable open science workflows. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, with staff from over 50 countries and strong collaborations across scientific and professional sectors.

This doctoral project is part of a five-year, government-funded initiative aimed at preparing Luxembourg for climate challenges by integrating research, education, policy, and public engagement. The Institutional Readiness pillar, where this position is based, leverages socio-environmental data to enhance climate services and monitor systemic risks. The PhD candidate will conduct field studies to map chemical substances in Luxembourg, focusing on those detrimental to human health and ecosystems in the context of climate change. The work will build on existing knowledge and contribute to policy-relevant outcomes, collaborating with the Department of Engineering, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity (MECB), and the Water Management Authority (AGE).

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in environmental science, engineering, cheminformatics, or a closely related field, with a strong background in environmental chemistry and non-target screening using high resolution mass spectrometry (NT-HRMS). The role requires analytical and problem-solving skills, enthusiasm for policy-relevant case studies, willingness to conduct extensive field and laboratory work, and a collaborative, proactive approach. Language proficiency at B2 level in the thesis language is required, with accepted certificates as specified by the university.
