About this position

Doctoral Researcher in Geographic Information Systems at the University of Luxembourg, within the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) and the FINATRAX Research Group.

The position sits at the intersection of Geographic Information Systems, information systems research, geospatial economics, and econometrics, with an application focus on cash infrastructures and financial services through an industry partnership with Banque Centrale du Luxembourg (BCL). The doctoral researcher will also be connected to Prof. Gilbert Fridgen’s PayPal-FNR PEARL Research Grant and collaboration with the FutureFinTech National Centre of Excellence in Research and Innovation.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary and international research environment that combines business research, information systems engineering, and socio-technical perspectives on technology in organisations. Research activities may include surveys, interviews, networking events, and publication in well-ranked journals and conferences. The role is designed for candidates who want to contribute to impactful research in FinTech and related digital transformation themes.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in Information Systems or Computer Science, preferably with prior coursework in Information Systems, web design, or GeoIS. Applicants should have foundational experience with tools such as R, Python, QGIS, or ArcGIS, and an interest in web development and both qualitative and quantitative methods. Strong English proficiency is required, along with at least B2-level proficiency in the language of the thesis.

The contract is full-time for 36 months, extendable up to 48 months if required. The yearly gross salary is EUR 44,531. The work is based at Kirchberg Campus in Luxembourg City, with an expectation to work on the partner’s premises 1–2 days per week. Applications are reviewed upon receipt, so early application is encouraged. Candidates must apply online through the HR system; email applications will not be considered.

This opportunity is especially suitable for applicants interested in GIS, geospatial methods, information systems, financial technology, and interdisciplinary research with real-world industry relevance.
