Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in graphene-based biosensors, located in Gothenburg, Sweden. This opportunity is part of the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory (QDP) within the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, a vibrant and international research environment advancing quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics, and future electronic systems. The department offers direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities and fosters interdisciplinary collaborations across academia, industry, and society.
The research project is embedded in the BUG-ID Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Doctoral Network, funded by the European Commission's Horizon Europe Program. The consortium, comprising seven European universities, a research institute, a hospital, and six private companies, aims to address the global challenge of early and accurate diagnosis of bacterial infections. The project focuses on developing high-sensitivity and selectivity graphene biosensors, training doctoral candidates in interdisciplinary research spanning nanotechnology, materials science, molecular microbiology, biochemistry, infection medicine, and AI-based data analysis.
As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, develop scientific concepts, and communicate research results. Responsibilities include mastering graphene growth by chemical vapor deposition, sensor layout design, evaluating materials for biocompatibility, functionalizing graphene devices in collaboration with chemists, and assessing device sensitivity. You will utilize microfabrication facilities to pattern devices, measure biosensor sensitivity and selectivity, validate electronics setups, and explore innovative sensor readout mechanisms, potentially integrating microfluidic systems. Data analysis, report writing, and article publication are integral parts of the role. Teaching duties may comprise up to 20% of working hours, extending the position to five years.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree for those educated outside Sweden) in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Material Science, or Biophysics. Strong English communication skills and experience in problem-solving are mandatory. Additional experience in microfabrication, electronic-circuit design, programming (Python, C, Matlab), and electrical measurements is highly valued. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
The position offers a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), full employee benefits, and a dynamic working environment in Gothenburg.
