About this position
This doctoral project is based in the Division for Concrete Structures at KTH Civil and Architectural Engineering and focuses on the structural health monitoring of reinforced concrete dams used in hydropower. The research addresses the ageing of dams in Sweden and elsewhere, where long service lives can lead to cracking, leaching, surface wear, and more difficult-to-detect damage such as reinforcement corrosion.
The project aims to improve understanding of how concrete dams respond during normal operation and how that response can be measured effectively. The doctoral student will work on identifying what should be monitored, where sensors should be placed, and which sensor types are appropriate for long-term monitoring. Another important part of the project is to help determine reasonable alarm limits for safe operation.
The work is part of SVC – Swedish Centre for Sustainable Hydropower, a national research programme in hydropower. The research is carried out together with senior researchers at KTH and in interdisciplinary collaboration with international researchers and industry partners, giving the student access to a broad applied research environment connected to both academia and industry.
The proposed supervision team is Andreas Sjölander, Anders Ansell, and Erik Nordström.
