About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Mathematical General Relativity, supervised by Associate Professor Thomas Bäckdahl. The position is based at the Division of Analysis and Probability Theory within the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the largest mathematics department in Sweden, offering a vibrant, international, and supportive research environment.
The research project focuses on the mathematics of general relativity, particularly the study of quasi-linear partial differential equation (PDE) systems in strongly curved geometries. Key topics include black holes, their stability, uniqueness, decay of fields, and geometric properties. The project integrates modern analysis techniques such as Morawetz estimates, Penrose's geometrical formalisms, symmetry operators, spinor methods, and advanced computer algebra tools. A major aim is to characterize spacetime symmetries and develop coordinate-independent methods for metric perturbations, with broad applicability to other PDE problems.
As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Mathematics, develop your own scientific concepts, and communicate research results both verbally and in writing. The position includes up to 20% departmental work, primarily teaching duties, which may extend the contract from four to five years. You will be part of an international research community, with opportunities for autonomous work, collaboration, and travel.
Applicants must have a strong background in mathematics, evidenced by excellent grades and thesis work. By the start date, you must hold a Master's degree (120 or 60 credits) in mathematics or a related field, or a 4-year Bachelor's degree if educated outside Sweden. Strong English communication skills are required, but TOEFL/IELTS is not mandatory; proficiency is typically demonstrated through academic writing. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented at the start.
The position is fully funded from the outset, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and is supported by the Swedish Research Council. Chalmers offers comprehensive employee benefits, including parental leave, subsidized childcare, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender equality and diversity, with initiatives such as the GENIE project. Swedish language courses are available for non-native speakers.
To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files (max 40 MB each) via the provided online form. Required documents include your CV, personal letter, motivation, thesis and transcripts, and contact details for two references. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. The application deadline is February 23, 2026.
For further information, contact Thomas Bäckdahl ([email protected]), Anders Södergren ([email protected]), or Jakob Björnberg ([email protected]). For more details and to apply, visit the official Chalmers job portal.
