About this position
Chalmers University of Technology is offering multiple fully funded doctoral student positions in Artificial Intelligence, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the division of Data Science and AI.
The position is part of Julian Togelius’ new research group, with direct supervision from Professor Julian Togelius. The project is intentionally open-ended and will be shaped in dialogue between advisor and student. The research focus sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, creativity, games, art, philosophy, and other related domains, and the team is looking for candidates who are excited by both technical and conceptual work.
This is an especially interesting opportunity for applicants who want to explore novel directions in AI and contribute to top-tier research in machine learning and artificial intelligence, while working closely with a collaborative, in-person team of PhD students, postdocs, and visitors. The group emphasizes experimentation, intellectual curiosity, and the development of both problems and solutions.
Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or for applicants educated outside Sweden, an accepted 4-year Bachelor’s degree. Strong knowledge of AI is required, and applicants with published papers, complementary experience outside AI, and broad intellectual interests are encouraged.
The position is fully funded from the start. It is a fixed-term appointment for four years, with the possibility of teaching up to 20%, which may extend the position to five years. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026). Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date.
Applications must be submitted in English through the online application form by 15 October 2026. Required documents include a CV, personal letter, motivation statement, references, written work links, and degree projects/transcripts. Applications sent by email or incomplete applications will not be considered.
