About this position
Caltech’s Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences, in collaboration with The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, is inviting applications for the Eleanor Searle Postdoctoral Scholar Teaching Fellow in the History of Science and Technology.
This is a two-year postdoctoral appointment beginning in time for Caltech’s fall term 2027. The role is split evenly between a half-time teaching appointment at Caltech and a half-time research appointment at The Huntington, making it especially attractive for scholars who want to combine undergraduate teaching with archival or museum-based research.
The position is designed for candidates working in History, especially the history of science and technology and closely related fields. The appointment is contingent upon completion of the Ph.D. before the start date.
Selected fellows will teach two ten-week undergraduate courses per year at Caltech and will conduct research at The Huntington. Applicants are expected to submit a cover letter, a research statement focused on work at The Huntington, a current CV, a sample of original written work, three letters of recommendation, and an education statement describing teaching philosophy, mentorship, and approaches to inclusive classroom practice.
The deadline for applications is December 15, 2026. The advertised hiring salary is $75,268, and Caltech notes that eligible employees receive comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement savings plans, paid time off, parental leave, bereavement leave, tuition reimbursement, and more.
Applications must be submitted electronically through the Caltech application portal. After submitting the form, applicants should send the system-generated link to their three references for recommendation uploads. If necessary, materials may be mailed to the Chair, History of Science and Technology Postdoc Search at Caltech in Pasadena, California.
