About this position
PhD Researcher position at the University of Porto (FEUP)
The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) is recruiting one Entry-Level PhD Researcher for the SmarTuBending project, a research and innovation initiative focused on smart, efficient, and connected bending machines. The position is based at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal.
Research focus
The successful candidate will strengthen the environmental integration and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) components of the iMOB digital platform. The work aims to operationalise environmental impact and carbon footprint quantification, including Scope 3 emissions, and convert these results into digital decision-support indicators for industrial use. The project connects environmental engineering with digital platform development, ecodesign, sustainability assessment, and industrial decision support.
Methods and tools
The position involves recognized LCA methodologies (ISO 14040/44), carbon footprint standards (GHG Protocol/ISO 14067), and specialist software such as SimaPro. The research output may also support Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). The researcher will contribute to project dissemination, public presentations, management tasks, and may occasionally assist in teaching and training activities.
Eligibility highlights
Applicants must hold a PhD in Environmental Engineering or a closely related field, awarded within the last five years, and have a scientific profile aligned with the project. Essential experience includes lead-authored publications in English in SCOPUS or Web of Science indexed journals on LCA applied to processes, products, or technologies, plus hands-on expertise in carbon footprint accounting and LCA software. If the doctorate was awarded outside Portugal, recognition must be completed before the contract is signed. Candidates who are not native speakers of Portuguese or English must demonstrate C1-level proficiency in at least one of these languages.
Funding and contract
The appointment is a fixed-term employment contract of uncertain duration, expected to last 8 months, with a gross monthly base remuneration of €3,019.58, plus holiday pay, Christmas allowance, and meal allowance under applicable public employment rules. The project is co-financed by COMPETE 2030, Portugal 2030, and the European Union.
Selection and application
Selection is based on scientific and curricular assessment (90%) and an interview (10%) for shortlisted candidates. Applications must be submitted through Apply UP by 2026-11-04 23:59 Lisbon time. Required materials include a CV covering the last five years, proof of qualifications, copies of key publications, and any other supporting documents relevant to merit evaluation.
