About this position
The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command, offers an ORISE post-doctoral fellowship in its Military Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division. The position is centered on environmental physiology and warfighter performance science in extreme environments.
The fellow will collaborate on ongoing studies that combine physiologic and biologic data collection with practical efforts to understand and predict environmental injury. The research portfolio includes projects on acute mountain sickness, heat exhaustion, cold injury, heat stroke, altitude acclimatization, and the development and validation of wearable sensors and biomarker-based risk prediction approaches.
Working with a mentor in a highly applied military research setting, the fellow will contribute to human data collection, field-based measurements, protocol development, and data analysis. The role also emphasizes the use of statistical and machine learning methods on real-world human performance data, with opportunities to support documentation for research oversight and to build experience relevant to principal investigator-level work.
USARIEM’s research environment spans military nutrition, military performance, thermal and mountain medicine, and research support, with work that supports preventive medicine, performance optimization, physiological monitoring strategies, and predictive algorithms for Warfighters operating in demanding conditions.
