About this position

Uppsala University is recruiting two ERC-funded postdoctoral researchers in natural hazards for the ERC Consolidator Grant project FORECAST (Unified Framework for Modelling Progressive to Catastrophic Failure in Fractured Media).

The positions are based at the Department of Earth Sciences, within the research program Air, Water and Landscape Sciences (LUVAL), in Uppsala, Sweden. The project develops a new framework for understanding, diagnosing, and forecasting catastrophic failure in geophysical systems, with a focus on glacier instabilities and volcanic eruptions. The work combines theoretical modelling, statistical physics, numerical simulations, monitoring data, geomechanics, and geophysics.

Successful candidates will join an international research team and collaborate with researchers working on geohazard forecasting and risk mitigation. The postdocs may also co-supervise PhD students and contribute to the broader ERC programme. The employment is full time and temporary for 3 years.

Eligibility and requirements: a PhD in geomechanics, geophysics, physics, mathematics, or engineering (or equivalent); the degree must be obtained by the time of the employment decision. Applicants should have strong mathematics, mechanics, and physics skills, experience in scientific programming and computational modelling, and a record of peer-reviewed publications. Recent PhD graduates are preferred, though exceptions may apply.

Application deadline: 14 August 2026. Apply via Uppsala University's recruitment system and include a CV, publication list, PhD certificate, PhD thesis, other relevant documents, and contact details for two referees. The cover letter is replaced by application questions.

Contact: Qinghua Lei, Associate Professor at Uppsala University, [email protected].
