About this position
Harvard University’s Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics is inviting applications for the Ethics & Civics Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. The fellowship is housed in the Center’s Research & Design Studio, an interdisciplinary hub focused on the ethical and political dimensions of disagreement, civil discourse, and how to rebuild a culture of principled disagreement in higher education and public life.
This is a postdoctoral fellowship for scholars and practitioners who want to connect ethics, civics, civil discourse, and pedagogy with their own research and teaching. Fellows will develop pedagogical tools or practices, participate in seminars, engage with public lectures and workshops, and advance individual research projects with support from the Center’s research and pedagogy teams. Fellows may also be invited to teach a Harvard class during the appointment.
The fellowship is residential: fellows are expected to live in the Boston area and be present at the Center at least three days per week. The appointment is renewable for a second year at the Center’s discretion, and the program plans to welcome three new fellows and up to three returning fellows each year.
Funding: $7,000/month for the 2027–28 academic year (September through June), plus a research allowance of up to $3,000 per year for approved work-related expenses such as travel, books, and research assistance.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must have completed a doctoral degree no more than three years before the fellowship start date. Applicants from any discipline or professional field may apply. Advanced English proficiency is required, and application materials must be in English. Non-native English speakers may need to demonstrate proficiency through prior study at an English-speaking institution or TOEFL/IELTS scores.
How to apply: submit the application through Harvard’s ARIeS portal. Prepare a cover letter, CV, research proposal (up to 1,000 words), lesson plan or teaching activity example, recent writing sample, unofficial graduate transcript, and contact information for three references. No letters are accepted at the initial stage.
Deadline: November 15, 2026.
