About this position
The National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan, is recruiting one experienced Senior Researcher or Researcher for its Bridge Structure Research Group within the Structural Maintenance Research Center.
The successful candidate will conduct research and development on bridge surveying, design, construction, and maintenance. Duties also include providing technical support to government agencies and disseminating technologies developed through research. The group works to improve bridge safety, long-term durability, disaster resilience, and rapid functional recovery after earthquakes and torrential rains, while translating research findings into technical standards and practical infrastructure policy.
This is a full-time employment position equivalent to a senior researcher or researcher/postdoctoral-level role, but it is not a doctoral or postdoctoral training opening. The initial contract is fixed-term for three years, with mandatory-retirement arrangements thereafter. The annual income is at least ¥6 million, with the final salary determined by qualifications and experience. Benefits include salary increases, bonuses, retirement allowance, commuting allowance, and statutory insurance.
Applicants must hold a PhD or a master's degree or higher in science or engineering. Practical experience in consulting or construction companies, or academic research experience in bridge engineering, is desirable. Candidates should be able to lead research independently, train junior researchers, support implementation, and contribute to infrastructure safety. Applications are accepted from October 30, 2026, through January 8, 2027, with rolling review and possible early closure. The anticipated appointment date is April 1, 2027.
Applications must be submitted by mail to the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management. Consult the official recruitment page and application PDF for the complete document list and procedures.
