About this position
The Biomedical and Astronomical Signal Processing (BASP) laboratory at Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, led by Professor Yves Wiaux, is seeking a PhD student to conduct research on foundational deep learning methodologies for computational imaging in astronomy and medicine. BASP is renowned for its innovative work spanning theory, algorithms, and diverse applications in computational imaging. The lab is involved in major research projects funded by UK Research Councils, focusing on developing next-generation image reconstruction and analysis algorithms that integrate deep learning, optimisation, and Bayesian sampling. These algorithms aim to achieve high-resolution and dynamic range imaging, incorporate calibration and uncertainty quantification, and scale to unprecedented image sizes and data volumes.
The project will involve designing, implementing, and validating these algorithms for applications in both astronomy and medical imaging. The research will also address theoretical aspects, such as convergence guarantees and the development of novel stochastic optimisation algorithms for training deep networks.
The initiative is supported by international partners, including the Digital Vision Centre at Université Paris-Saclay and the Institute of Computer Graphics and Vision at Graz University of Technology. The successful candidate will join BASP under the supervision of Prof.
Wiaux, with potential co-supervision from collaborators at partner institutions. Applicants should have a first class Master’s degree (or equivalent) in electrical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong academic record and motivation.
The scholarship is fully funded for 3.5 years and is open to international students, with a flexible start date in 2026. Applications are accepted year-round, with screening beginning in December 2025 and continuing until the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter, transcript, CV, and two references to Prof. Wiaux via email.
