Fully Funded DPhil in Digital Health: Wearables, Health and Wellness University of Oxford in United Kingdom

Fully funded DPhil (PhD) opportunity in Digital Health at the University of Oxford on the topic Wearables, Health and Wellness.

The project is based in the Medical Sociology and Health Experiences Group within the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. The research will examine consumer use of wearable devices such as smart watches, smart rings, fitness devices, and related technologies in relation to health and wellness. Likely themes include activity rings, heart rate data, wellness scores, adoption patterns, motivational drivers, barriers to sustained use, and the perceived value of wellness insights.

The research group typically takes a sociotechnical perspective, so the project may explore how individuals engage with wearable features and how these technologies influence health behaviours. Methods may include literature review, observations, interviews, and usage data analysis, depending on the final research question and the successful candidate.

Funding includes Home fees for 3 years and an annual stipend of at least £23,000. Overseas applicants are welcome, but they must cover the difference in fees. The opportunity starts in Autumn 2026.
