About this position
Fully funded PhD and MASc opportunities are open at the ELIXIR Lab at Toronto Metropolitan University for students interested in robotics, mechatronics, soft robotics, embodied intelligence, and AI-driven control.
The lab studies how physical systems like robots can learn, adapt, and make intelligent decisions in unpredictable real-world environments on Earth and in space. Research themes include space robotics, soft robotics, embodied intelligence, embodied AI, learning, planning, and control. The lab works on reinforcement learning, neural networks, advanced control systems, and real-robot experimentation, with applications ranging from assistive robots and factory automation to space missions.
Applicants should be highly qualified and interested in one of the ongoing research areas. Priority is given to domestic applicants with a robotics/mechatronics background, especially those with experience in learning-based or classical nonlinear, robust, or adaptive controls. Strong international applicants with high academic standing and strong IELTS/TOEFL scores are also encouraged to apply. Exposure to the space industry is considered an asset.
Funding is described as fully funded, and preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents in line with funding requirements. The lab notes that admitted students may have the opportunity to work closely with leading-edge space companies.
To apply, complete the ELIXIR Lab form and attach your CV and transcripts. Applicants may also send their materials and a brief statement of research interests via email or LinkedIn. If selected, the Program Director will contact candidates to arrange an interview.
