About this position

Fully funded PhD position in atmospheric physics and artificial intelligence at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), hosted by the DAWN group within the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics and UNIL’s Expertise Center for Climate Extremes.

The project sits at the intersection of atmospheric science, climate science, and scientific machine learning. The group invites candidates to propose their own creative and feasible PhD idea aligned with themes such as aerosol–cloud interactions, atmospheric convection, forecasting and predictability, cloud physics, weather and climate extremes, causal ML, generative modeling, hybrid physics–AI modeling, interpretable ML, physics-constrained ML, operator learning, and sustainable AI.

Funding: the position is funded for up to 5 years and includes salary, research travel, equipment, access to computing resources, and open-access publication support when appropriate. The advertised salary ranges from approximately CHF 54k in year 1 to CHF 63k in year 5, subject to satisfactory yearly reviews.

Eligibility: applicants should hold, or expect to complete before the start date, a master’s degree in a quantitative field such as atmospheric science, climate science, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, machine learning, or data science. Strong programming and data-analysis skills are expected, ideally in Python, along with experience handling scientific datasets or large-scale model output and a solid foundation in applied mathematics and/or physics. Strong English communication skills are required; French and German are not required.

Application materials: CV, degree certificates and transcripts, a separate PDF with two references, one lead-authored research report, a short statement on research experience/goals/teaching, and a 500-word personal statement describing a proposed PhD project idea. The proposal should include a tentative title, scientific question, novelty/timeliness, connection to the job themes, and possible data/models.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
