About this position
Fully funded 4-year PhD opportunity in cancer immunotherapy and cell engineering through the Cancer Research UK City of London Centre PhD Programme.
The project focuses on engineering shielded, bone marrow homing regulatory T cells (Tregs) for hypoplastic myelodysplastic neoplasms. The research aims to develop next-generation engineered Tregs that can survive the inflammatory bone marrow environment and preferentially localise to the marrow.
Key scientific themes include T cell engineering, cancer immunology, gene circuits, flow cytometry, functional assays, and preclinical models. The project will combine FAS resistance, hypoxia-responsive CXCR4 expression, and inducible IL-10 to test whether engineered Tregs can suppress pathogenic immune responses while protecting residual haematopoiesis.
Primary supervisor: Shahram Kordasti, King’s College London. Secondary supervisor: Sara Ghorashian, University College London. Potential placements include the Francis Crick Institute and collaborating groups at King’s College London.
The programme provides a fully funded 4-year PhD with a stipend of £25,074 in year 1, increasing annually, plus access to a broad network of scientific and clinical researchers across central London.
Applications are now open for an Autumn 2027 start.
