About this position
Brunel University of London is recruiting for a fully funded PhD studentship in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): Modelling the PhAse BehaviouR of Impure CO₂ Streams for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Applications (MARCO2S).
This project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, thermodynamics, fluid phase equilibria, process modelling, and CCS transport and storage infrastructure. The research will investigate the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) behaviour of impure CO₂ streams and evaluate, improve, and validate equations of state (EOS) and thermodynamic models for mixtures containing impurities such as NOx, SOx, H₂S, CH₄, H₂, NH₃, and water.
The project is hosted within Brunel Engineering and connects expertise in geological CO₂ storage and CO₂ capture. The principal supervisor is Dr Lee Hosking (Civil Engineering / Energy Geomechanics), and the co-supervisor is Dr Salman Masoudi Soltani (Chemical Engineering / CO₂ Capture).
Funding: EPSRC & TWI funded. Stipend approx. £23,805 per year including London weighting. Full Home tuition fees are covered. Duration is 42 months (3.5 years).
Eligibility: Expected 1st or 2:1 honours degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Design, Maths, Physics, Economics, or a related discipline. A Master’s degree is desirable but not required. Applicants should have relevant skills, strong communication ability, and be able to work independently and collaboratively. English language qualification is required if applicable. Limited international studentships are available (max 30% of intake).
Application deadline: noon on 12 June 2026. Interviews are expected in June/July 2026. Start date: 1 October 2026.
How to apply: Email one PDF application to [email protected] including the application form, 1200-word research proposal with references, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, English language qualification if applicable, equal opportunities form, and contact details for two referees (one academic).
