About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at Western University in Canada, focused on advanced oxidation and wastewater disinfection.
The project develops high-fidelity CFD models of advanced oxidation and disinfection reactors, with emphasis on turbulent flow, mixing, residence time distributions, oxidant transport, gas-liquid mass transfer, and reactive species generation. The models will be integrated with experimental data from pilot-scale physical twins and combined with Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to build intelligent digital twins for optimizing micropollutant removal and pathogen inactivation in water reuse applications.
The work is carried out in collaboration with municipal utilities, consulting engineers, and technology developers, offering a strong applied research environment and opportunities to translate CFD and AI-enabled modeling into engineering practice.
Eligibility highlights: MSc in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Environmental, or Computational Engineering (or related discipline); experience with ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, STAR-CCM+, COMSOL, or similar CFD tools; background in turbulence modelling, reactive transport, multiphase flow, or mass transfer is highly desirable; programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or C++ are an asset.
