About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Essex in collaboration with Tropical Marine Centre (UK), focused on coral recovery after bleaching events.

You will work in the Essex Coral Reef Research Unit aquarium and investigate what makes corals more or less likely to recover after bleaching. The project combines marine biology, coral husbandry, environmental science, and optical imaging approaches, including light-sheet microscopy and optical coherence tomography, to study symbiont dynamics inside coral tissue.

Using optical and chemical microsensors, you will measure how environmental conditions inside coral tissue influence symbiont growth and recovery. You will also develop your own imaging pipeline to track recovery over time and analyse complex datasets, including 3D imaging data.

The studentship offers training in coral husbandry from a leading UK company, experience designing and performing experiments in a research aquarium, and opportunities to work with experts on live imaging and microsensor techniques. You will also gain experience communicating science to both academic and non-academic audiences.

Eligibility/requirements: interest in coral biology, marine science, experimental research, imaging, and data analysis. The post is advertised as a fully funded PhD studentship.

Deadline: 16 December 2026.

Apply via the jobs.ac.uk vacancy page and contact Dr Elena Bollati at [email protected] for queries.
