About this position

Fully Funded PhD Position in Earth and Planetary Sciences at The University of Hong Kong (HKU)

Meng Guo (Assistant Professor, HKU) is recruiting one PhD student to join the Gaia Lab in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The project focuses on how Earth evolved from a newly formed rocky planet into a habitable world, combining geochemical and geophysical principles with quantitative Earth-system and planetary modeling.

Research directions may include late accretion and impact evolution of the Earth, Moon, and Mars; chemical evolution of planetary atmospheres; coupled silicate Earth–atmosphere–ocean modeling; early Earth habitability and the origin of life; and comparative evolution of rocky planets.

The position is fully funded for the four-year PhD programme. The standard HKU Postgraduate Scholarship is approximately HKD 19,135 per month. Strong candidates may also be considered for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme and the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship, which offer enhanced financial and travel support.

Applicants should have a strong interest in theoretical or computational geoscience, experience in geochemical, Earth-system, or planetary modeling, independent problem-solving ability, and good academic English writing and communication skills. Suitable backgrounds include geoscience, planetary science, geochemistry, astrobiology, geophysics, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, or related fields.

To apply, email a brief personal statement, a statement of research interests, and a CV to [email protected]. Formal application details are available via the HKU Graduate School.
