About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity at the Universidad de Zaragoza within the ERC Starting Grant VISIONSAFE, hosted by the Aragon Institute of Engineering Research (I3A). The project is centered on experimental and computational eye imaging, with a strong focus on ophthalmic imaging, optical phantoms, image analysis, and ocular tissue characterization for early disease detection.

The research combines design and fabrication of tissue-mimicking optical phantoms, experimental measurements using ophthalmic imaging systems and microscopy, development of image and data processing algorithms, and quantitative analysis of experimental data. The work also involves participation in scientific publications and international conferences, making it a strong fit for candidates interested in translational imaging research at the interface of physics, engineering, and biomedical science.

Eligible backgrounds include Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Imaging Science, Materials Science, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields. The post specifically values experience in image/data processing, interest in ophthalmic imaging and microscopy, hands-on laboratory skills, and programming ability in MATLAB and/or Python. Good written and spoken English is required.

Funding is described as a fully funded PhD position for 3 years with a possible extension, with salary according to Universidad de Zaragoza regulations and candidate experience. The position is based in Zaragoza, Spain, and offers access to clinical and experimental ophthalmic imaging systems plus collaboration with international academic and clinical partners.

Application deadline: 3 June 2026. To apply, send a CV, a one-page motivation letter, and optionally reference contact details to [email protected], addressed to Prof. Alejandra Consejo. More information is available on the VISIONSAFE job offers page.
