Fully funded PhD opportunity in Germany at the University of Bonn and the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) within the BCDSS–IDOS research group Power, Knowledge, and Servitude at Sea (POESIS).
The position is a Doctoral Researcher (f/m/diverse) role in the project “Extractive Dependencies”, based in Bonn and embedded in an interdisciplinary research environment focused on dependency studies, development, sustainability, and maritime worlds.
Research themes include extractivism, environmental justice, ecological personhood, Rights of Nature, coastal and riverine environments, hydrological transformations, dams, dredging, marine frontiers, multispecies relations, and the extraction of knowledge, expertise, and data. The project welcomes historically informed and methodologically diverse proposals using ethnographic, archival, socio-legal, multispecies, arts-based, or experimental approaches.
Eligibility: a Master’s degree with very good grades in critical social sciences and/or humanities; relevant background in anthropology, sociology, environmental history, maritime/ocean studies, STS, or related fields; interdisciplinary research-methods experience; strong writing and communication skills; and English fluency. Experience in Global South or majority-world contexts, or regions shaped by colonial/post-socialist histories, is especially valued. German is an asset.
Funding: 65% TVöD EG13 / TVöD Bund position for four years, with a gross annual salary of approximately €39,000–€55,000, plus mentoring, training, conferences, fieldwork support, research stays, and a subsidized Deutschland-Job-Ticket.

What's required
Applicants need a Master’s degree with very good grades in critical social sciences and/or humanities, with interest in multimodal ethnographic, archival, and digital approaches. Relevant knowledge or experience is required in environmental history, anthropology, sociology, maritime and critical ocean studies, science and technology studies (STS), or related fields. Candidates should have interdisciplinary research-methods experience across the social sciences and humanities, demonstrable research or work experience in a Global South/majority-world context or in a region shaped by colonial histories and/or post-socialist transformation, strong writing, communication, and organisational skills, and an interest in science communication, storytelling, cultural production, and co-creative practice. Fluent written and spoken English is required; German is an asset. Willingness to travel abroad, including tropical climates, is required. If available, IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or equivalent may evidence English proficiency.
