The successful candidate will develop a mobile app powered by artificial intelligence and participate in clinical validation with clinicians actively involved.

The project emphasizes cutting-edge research in conversational AI, natural language processing, large language models, and health informatics, with a strong focus on safety and real-world impact. The position includes a generous tax-free stipend of AUD $38,000 per year for up to three years, additional clinical trial support up to AUD $5,000, and a one-day-per-week embedded industry internship to gain practical experience. Essential research costs, such as laptops and conference attendance, are covered through RTP support.

Applicants should have a robust background in computer science, AI, or software engineering, with research training (Honours, MRes, MPhil, or publications). Key skills include Python, modern machine learning frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow), solid mathematics, and the ability to build AI-powered applications. Experience in NLP, LLMs, RAG, safety/guardrailing, evaluation/MLOps, or multimodal I/O is highly desirable. The PhD program at Western Sydney University is internationally recognized, with candidates conducting independent research under expert supervision.
