About this position
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD at Aston University within the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT). The project is titled Next-Generation Optical Signal Processing Using Nonlinear Fourier Methods and focuses on optical signal processing, optical communications, photonics, and nonlinear optics.
The research addresses how to control the nonlinear Fourier spectrum in hardware, with a particular emphasis on developing and applying Optical Darboux Transformers to add or remove solitons without disturbing the rest of the signal. Experimental implementation will be explored in optical fibre, fibre lasers, and resonator systems, supported by numerical simulations. The outcomes are expected to contribute to optical communications and high-performance pulsed lasers.
This PhD is suitable for candidates with a background in optics, physics, opto-electronics, optical engineering, or related scientific/technical disciplines. Experience with optical amplifiers, optical communication systems, experimental work, or numerical simulation is highly desirable, especially with peer-reviewed journal or conference publications.
The studentship is full-time, lasts three years, and starts in April 2026. Applications must be complete and include transcripts and certificates, a research statement, a personal statement, two academic referees, English language evidence, and a passport copy where relevant. Incomplete applications will be automatically rejected.
Project enquiries: Dr Mingming Tan ([email protected]). Application-process enquiries: [email protected]. Apply before 1 January 2027.
