About this position
PhD opportunity in spatiotemporal integrated metamaterials and nonreciprocal photonics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Department of Electrical Engineering. The project is part of the SPARK Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network and focuses on designing dynamically modulated, chip-scale metamaterials for nonreciprocal light control.
The research combines theoretical and numerical design, on-chip fabrication using advanced nanolithography, and experimental demonstration of nonreciprocal light transport. The work aims to integrate these metamaterials into photonic circuits for applications in optical communication and quantum technologies.
The PhD candidate will join the Photonic Integration group at TU/e and work in a multidisciplinary, international team. The project includes close collaboration with Prof. M. Piccardo at INESC MN, Portugal, plus secondments: a 6-month stay at INESC MN for component measurements and a 3-month stay at PICadvanced for chip-level integration.
Eligibility and requirements: a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optics, Applied Physics, Materials Engineering, or a related field; a research-oriented mindset; ability to work in an interdisciplinary team; interest in industrial collaboration; willingness to develop teaching and student-coaching skills; and English C1. MSCA rules apply: applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the mobility rule for the Netherlands.
Funding and conditions: this is a full-time PhD employment for four years with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is scale P with a gross base salary of €3,204–€4,051 per month, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, leave, training support, and other employee benefits. The position is EU-funded through the SPARK MSCA Doctoral Network.
How to apply: submit your application online via the TU/e vacancy page. Include a cover letter, CV with research experience and publications, contact details for three references, a list of master courses with ECTS and grades, and any other relevant information. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Deadline: 14 November 2026.
