About this position
Applications are invited for a funded PhD project at Aston University in the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT), working with Dr Mingming Tan on Next-Generation Optical Signal Processing Using Nonlinear Fourier Methods.
This project sits at the intersection of optical physics, photonics, optical communications, and nonlinear signal processing. The research explores how the nonlinear Fourier spectrum can be used to better describe and control light in nonlinear systems, with a focus on solitons and the development of Optical Darboux Transformers for adding or removing solitons without disturbing the rest of the signal.
The work will involve experimental implementation in optical fibre, fibre lasers, and resonator systems, supported by numerical simulations. Outcomes are expected to contribute to optical communications and high-performance pulsed lasers.
The studentship is open to students worldwide, and the position is based on the Aston Campus in Birmingham, UK. The successful candidate should be able to attend in person regularly.
Eligibility highlights include a relevant degree in optics, physics, opto-electronics, photonics, nonlinear physics, or optical engineering. A strong academic record is expected: either a relevant bachelor’s degree with First Class or 2.1, or a relevant bachelor’s degree with First Class or 2.1 plus a master’s degree with Merit or higher. Experience with optical amplifiers or optical communication systems, especially with publications, is desirable.
Funding includes full tuition fee coverage and a UKRI-rate stipend.
To apply, prepare a complete application including transcripts and certificates, a research statement, personal statement, CV, two academic referees, English language evidence, and passport copy. Incomplete applications will be automatically rejected. The page provides the application link, and applicants may also contact the postgraduate admissions team for process questions.
