About this position
A fully funded PhD studentship is available at the Carnegie School of Sport, Leeds Beckett University, in collaboration with World Rugby. This unique opportunity focuses on developing and evaluating a Head Impact Reduction Framework using real-world data from the largest global deployment of instrumented mouthguards. The project aims to reduce head acceleration events (HAEs) and improve player welfare and performance in rugby, with a strong emphasis on applied, translational research that informs coaching practice, policy, and player safety at scale.
The successful candidate will work closely with elite coaches, medical and performance staff, and international research partners, contributing to a global commitment to enhance player safety and performance. The research will involve both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including data analysis from instrumented mouthguards, and will require fieldwork with elite rugby teams. The project is embedded in a vibrant research community and offers the chance to make a real-world impact on the future of rugby and athlete health.
Applicants should have a strong background in coaching, performance science, or a related field, and demonstrate an interest in both quantitative and qualitative research. A 2:1 or higher in a relevant undergraduate degree is required. For non-native English speakers, an overall IELTS score of 7.0 (no component below 6.5) is mandatory. The application process includes submitting a research proposal (max 2000 words), a statement of purpose (max 1000 words), and a current CV. The award will be made based on academic excellence, the strength of the research proposal, and fit with the project.
