About this position

Charles University’s Faculty of Science is offering a fully funded PhD position in Organic Chemistry, focusing on the development of new enantioselective reactions using N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). The successful candidate will join the Group of Asymmetric Synthesis, led by Professor Jan Veselý, and work under the supervision of Dr. Vojtěch Dočekal. The research aims to advance asymmetric organocatalysis, specifically targeting innovative catalytic strategies for enantioselective carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bond formation. These methodologies have broad applications in the synthesis of valuable (hetero)cyclic and structurally complex molecules, including biologically relevant compounds.

The project builds on the group’s recent advances in NHC-catalyzed transformations and offers training in state-of-the-art organic synthesis and catalysis. The research environment is described as supportive, dynamic, and collaborative, with opportunities to attend national and international conferences. The position is fully funded for four years, with living costs in Prague covered, and is set to begin in September/October 2026.

Applicants should hold an M.Sc. in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, or a related field, and have experience in the synthesis and characterization of small molecules. A strong interest in organic synthesis and catalysis, enthusiasm for learning new techniques, and the ability to work in a team are essential. Good English proficiency is required.

To apply, candidates should send their CV and cover letter to Dr. Vojtěch Dočekal ([email protected]) by 15 January 2026. For more information about the research group and its recent publications, visit the group’s academic page. This opportunity is ideal for motivated researchers seeking to push the boundaries of current organic synthesis and catalysis research in a leading European institution.
