About this position
The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) invites applications to its interdisciplinary PhD program for students interested in advanced research across astronomy, biology, computer science, chemistry and materials, data science and scientific computing, earth science, mathematics, neuroscience, and physics.
Based in a world-class research environment on the outskirts of Vienna, the program brings together an international scientific community representing more than 80 nationalities. English is used throughout the Institute for instruction and communication, creating an accessible environment for researchers from around the world.
Students begin with a first year of coursework and research-group rotations. This exploratory phase allows them to experience different research environments and identify a suitable topic and group before commencing in-depth thesis research. During their studies, PhD candidates work closely with faculty in small research groups and have access to first-rate scientific facilities.
ISTA emphasizes comprehensive interdisciplinary training and supports students through mentorship, career development programs, transferable-skills training, and Career Services. The Institute also provides opportunities to engage with scientific conferences, workshops, and the commercial development of research through its in-house science venture, xista.
The program welcomes applicants entering with either a Bachelor's or Master's degree in science and offers a structured route into doctoral research within a diverse, international institute.
