About this position

The University of Glasgow is offering two fully funded PhD opportunities within the VectorGrid-Africa project, part of the MVLS College Futures Themes PhD Programme. These positions are based at the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine and focus on establishing permanent mosquito and disease surveillance observatories across East and Southern Africa, with collaborations in Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, and Madagascar.

The first project, 'Unlocking Biodiversity Insights from Mosquito By-Catch,' involves using DNA barcoding, metabarcoding, and ecological modelling to characterize non-mosquito invertebrate diversity and identify indicators of ecosystem change. The second project, 'Multi-Pathogen Diagnostics & Climate–Ecological Modelling of RVF, Dengue & Chikungunya in Tanzania,' focuses on investigating these diseases using sequence-based diagnostics and climate–ecological modelling.

Supervisors include Prof Fredros Okumu, Prof Juan Morales, and Dr Jo Halliday. The programme is funded by the EU/EDCTP and the University of Glasgow, covering tuition and providing a stipend. Applicants should have a strong background in biology, environmental science, veterinary medicine, public health, or related fields, with experience in relevant research methods preferred. The application deadline is 12 January 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the University of Glasgow's official website.
