About this position
The Department of Biology at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) is recruiting doctoral students for Fall 2027. The program offers research opportunities across genomics, microbiology, ecology and evolution, cell and developmental biology, bioinformatics, and quantitative biology.
Students may apply directly to a single laboratory or enter a rotation program that allows them to conduct research in three labs before selecting an advisor. Research topics include genome evolution, evolutionary genomics, mycobacterial cell-wall biology, soil and human microbiomes, climate-smart agriculture, stem-cell signaling, embryonic development, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, mitochondrial stress, plant-microbe interactions, birth defects, infectious disease, antimicrobial resistance, biomolecular condensates, and RNA processing.
UTA also offers a Translational Precision Medicine PhD track developed with Cook Children’s Medical Center. This track focuses on rare genetic diseases and combines laboratory research with exposure to specialty clinics, biotechnology and pharmaceutical partners, and patient advocacy organizations.
All PhD students are guaranteed five years of funding, including a salary starting at $26,000 per year, tuition, and healthcare. Applicants must complete a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field by summer 2027. The department also seeks applicants with strong work ethic, independence, communication and teamwork skills, and excellent English writing and speaking ability. No prior experience is required.
Applications are due December 1, 2026, for a start date after August 16, 2027. Prospective applicants should review the recruiting laboratories and contact potential advisors before applying through the UTA Biology PhD program.
