About this position
The MINDxAI Lab at the University of Louisville, directed by Dr. Yunmei Liu, is recruiting up to two fully funded PhD students in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. The lab specializes in human-centric AI, adaptive systems design, and human-in-the-loop intelligent systems, integrating AI/ML to address real-world, safety-critical problems. Ongoing research projects include NSF-funded cognitive-emotional state modeling for adaptive automation, AI-based modeling of aggressive driving in mixed human-autonomous traffic, and EEG-based seizure detection and prediction with a focus on reliability and false-alarm control.
Selected students will work under Dr. Liu's supervision, benefiting from state-of-the-art facilities including driving simulators, EmotiBit sensors, eye-tracking systems, EEG headsets, and high-performance computing resources. The department is well-established, with strong research thrusts in decision analytics, human factors, ergonomics, and advanced manufacturing, and is supported by federal and industry contracts (NSF, DoD, ONR, NIST, NASA, FHWA, Toyota, GE Appliances/Haier).
Applicants should have a background in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields. Experience or strong interest in AI/ML and human-subjects experimentation is required, along with strong English writing and communication skills. The lab welcomes highly motivated students eager to address safety-critical problems through interdisciplinary research.
Funding is fully provided, covering tuition and stipend, with support from major research grants. The application deadline is December 28, 2025, for Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 start. To apply, email Dr. Yunmei Liu at [email protected] with your CV and transcripts, using the subject line 'PhD position: [Your Name]'.
