About this position

Fully funded PhD positions are available in nanoscience at the International Max Planck Research School for Science and Technology of Nano-Systems (IMPRS-STNS), hosted by the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics and the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg on one campus in Halle (Saale), Germany.

The programme focuses on physics, materials science, and chemistry, with research topics including spintronics and spin-orbit physics, superconductivity and quantum materials, atomically engineered thin films and interfaces, topological and chiral matter, ultrafast spin dynamics, unconventional and neuromorphic computing, quantum theory and first-principles modelling, polymer and materials chemistry, electron microscopy, and nanofabrication.

Successful applicants receive a fully funded employment contract (TVöD or TV-L), statutory health insurance and pension contributions, 30 days of annual leave plus German public holidays, and no tuition fees. English is the working language. The school also offers interdisciplinary training, mentoring, scientific communication and project management support, teaching and science policy exposure, childcare and family support, and an international research environment.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, or a related field, including a final thesis project, completed before the start date. Applications are open to candidates of any nationality, with a particular encouragement for women to apply. Projects start from spring 2027, with most beginning in summer or autumn.

The application deadline is 15 November 2026 at 23:59 CET. Interested candidates should review the individual PhD project pages, follow the application instructions listed there, and contact the named person on the relevant project page with the required documents.
