About this position

The UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Responsible and Trustworthy Natural Language Processing at the University of Edinburgh is now accepting applications for fully funded PhD studentships starting in September 2026. This unique programme, hosted by the Edinburgh Futures Institute, is designed to train the next generation of researchers in responsible and trustworthy NLP, with a strong interdisciplinary focus spanning computer science, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, law, education, and information technology.

Students will join a vibrant research community and benefit from supervision by leading academics including Ben Williamson, Cara Wilson, Jen Ross, Judy Robertson, and Sian Bayne, as well as a broad team of interdisciplinary supervisors. The programme is ideal for applicants interested in tackling critical issues posed by AI, especially in the context of education, ethics, and real-world applications of NLP.

The four-year PhD includes integrated training with credit-bearing courses in research methods, interdisciplinary teamwork, ethical dimensions of data and AI, and analysis of real-world NLP applications. Students will also undertake a training needs analysis to tailor their learning and have access to a wide range of courses across the University of Edinburgh. The CDT offers opportunities for placements and internships with over 70 partner organizations, as well as training in public engagement, entrepreneurship, and policy development.

Funding is comprehensive: all studentships cover tuition fees and provide an annual stipend. Home fees students receive an enhanced stipend of £30,780 per year (UKRI rate plus TechExpert supplement), while overseas students receive the standard UKRI stipend. Additional support is available for travel, equipment, materials, placements, and computing resources.

Applicants should have at least a 2:1 undergraduate or Master’s degree in a relevant field, or demonstrate equivalent professional experience. The application does not require a detailed research proposal or a confirmed supervisor; instead, applicants should outline their background, research interests, and potential supervisors. The deadline for applications is January 7, 2026. For more information, including application instructions and upcoming webinars, visit the Responsible NLP CDT website.
