About this position

Funded PhD opportunity at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in the Smith Lab within the School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB).

The project is in Biomedical Engineering and focuses on engineering the blood-brain barrier (BBB) for precision gene and therapeutic delivery. The lab works on next-generation gene delivery technologies, combining protein engineering, synthetic biology, viral vector engineering, extracellular vesicles, engineered secretion, and advanced human BBB models, with a current emphasis on the central nervous system.

This is a highly experimental project asking whether BBB cells can be engineered to enable precise, localised therapeutic delivery into the brain. The work spans molecular biology, protein biochemistry, gene delivery, cell culture, and advanced disease models.

Ideal applicants should have a B.Sc., M.Sc., or M.Tech. (or equivalent) in biochemistry, molecular/cell biology, biotechnology, biological engineering, or a related discipline. Strong hands-on experience in cloning/DNA assembly, bacterial and mammalian cell culture, protein expression/purification/characterisation, Western blotting, ELISA, and chromatography is preferred. Experience with extracellular vesicles/exosomes is a major advantage; viral vectors, membrane trafficking, protein secretion, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, endothelial cell biology, and advanced cell culture models are also valuable.

The position is funded and for the August 2027 intake. Applicants must meet all NTU PhD admissions requirements. To apply, email a CV and a one-page cover letter/email to [email protected] with the subject line "PhD Application, Aug 2027 Intake". Transcripts and test scores are optional at this stage. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Experimental independence, troubleshooting ability, and strong communication are required. Valuable experience includes extracellular vesicles/exosomes, adenoviral or other viral vectors, membrane trafficking or protein secretion, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, endothelial cell biology, and advanced cell culture models. Must meet all NTU PhD admissions requirements.

How to apply

Email [email protected] with the subject line "PhD Application, Aug 2027 Intake". Send a CV and a one-page cover letter/email explaining how your research experience matches the criteria and why the project interests you. Transcripts and test scores are optional at this stage.
