The University of Warwick is offering a PhD studentship on NSF Swarf: A Novel Forging Process for Closed-Loop Recycling of Metallic Swarf . This project sits within the Advanced Steel Research Team and explores how machining waste can be transformed back into valuable material through a patented near-solidus forging approach. Machining can remove 60–90% of a component’s material, creating large amounts of swarf that are often discarded and mixed with lower-grade waste. The Warwick process propos...

About this position

Imperial College London’s Department of Materials is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on developing a data-rich, non-destructive, on-wing inspection framework for ceramic coatings and composites used in aero-engines. The project is supervised by Dr. Oriol Gavaldà Díaz (Imperial College London) and Dr. Andres Gameros (Rolls-Royce), and is based at the Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics (CASC).

This research aims to address the challenges of inspecting ceramic-based materials in demanding environments, such as those found in aviation and energy generation. The project will leverage advanced Raman spectroscopy and data-driven analysis protocols, including machine learning, to interpret complex spectral data and link it to specific degradation mechanisms. Laboratory experiments will simulate degradation processes, generating reference datasets across various conditions, complemented by nanoscale characterisation (e.g., electron microscopy).

Rolls-Royce will provide real aero-engine samples to validate the developed databases and analysis protocols, supporting the implementation of in-situ/on-wing inspection tools. The project’s outcomes will enable predictive maintenance strategies and extend the lifetime of critical components, with potential applications in other sectors like nuclear energy.

The studentship is open to candidates eligible for Home fees only, as per UKRI guidelines. Applicants should have a strong background in materials science, mechanical engineering, physics, or related fields, with experience in data analysis, spectroscopy, or ceramics considered advantageous. The position is fully funded for 48 months, covering Home tuition fees, an annual UKRI stipend (£22,780 for AY 2025/26), and consumables (£1,000 for the first 3 years).

Applications are accepted all year round, with the expected start date in October 2026. Interested candidates should review the project details and apply via the Imperial College London PhD application portal. For technical queries, contact Dr. Oriol Gavaldà Díaz.
