About this position

Funded PhD opportunities are available at the University of Florida (UF/IFAS) in GeoAI and Earth system science focused on carbon-water ecosystem services.

The openings are with Dr. Chang Zhao and Dr. Jiangxiao Qiu, who are recruiting PhD students to work across two research directions: the Zhao Lab (Earth observation and GeoAI) and the Qiu Lab (landscape ecology and process-based modeling). The research integrates Earth observations, field and sensor data, process-based biophysical modeling, and artificial intelligence to understand and predict ecosystem services.

Applicants should have strong quantitative and computational preparation in areas such as geoinformatics, remote sensing, computer science, environmental engineering, hydrological modeling, Earth system science, or quantitative ecology. Substantial programming experience is expected, preferably in Python and R. For the Zhao Lab, remote sensing and deep learning experience are especially important; for the Qiu Lab, interest in hybrid modeling and knowledge-guided machine learning is preferred.

The positions are funded and begin in Fall 2027. The application deadline is December 31, 2026. Candidates are reviewed from a shared pool and matched to the lab that best fits their interests.

To apply, email both supervisors with a CV, a 1-2 page research statement indicating your primary interest as Zhao Lab, Qiu Lab, or Both, unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and contact information for three references. Use the subject line: PhD Opportunities Fall 2027 - [Zhao / Qiu / Both].
