About this position
The dark side of DNA is a fully funded PhD project at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, United Kingdom, within the Epigenetics Programme and the BioSCaPe doctoral training partnership.
The project explores how cytosolic DNA arises from the nucleus, how it is processed, and how it may contribute to ageing, DNA repair-related disease, and immune activation. The research combines genomics, molecular genetics, immunology, developmental biology, and bioinformatics.
Research aims include profiling cytosolic and secreted DNA in proliferating and quiescent cells, studying pathogenic mutations such as WRN, ATM, ERCC1, and RNASEH2, using DDR drugs to probe DNA-processing pathways, and applying the methods to young and old mouse tissues to investigate ageing phenotypes. The project also asks how different pathways of nuclear DNA egress generate immunogenic DNA species and which immune receptors are activated.
The successful candidate will work in a mixed wet/dry lab environment, generating sequencing libraries, optimising novel methods, and performing their own bioinformatic analysis. A strong interest in bioinformatics is an advantage, and full training will be provided.
Supervision is by Dr Jon Housley at the Babraham Institute. The post is part of a fully funded BioSCaPe iDLA Studentship leading to a University of Cambridge PhD.
Eligibility and application: applicants must meet University eligibility criteria and secure admission to the University of Cambridge. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The deadline for all PhD studentships is 2027-12-08, and interviews are scheduled for the week commencing 2027-01-18.
