About this position
The Graduate School of Empirical and Applied Linguistics at the University of Münster offers an interdisciplinary doctoral programme for promising early-stage researchers in linguistics. The programme brings together expertise from a wide range of linguistic fields, including general linguistics, second language acquisition and applied linguistics, German linguistics, English philology, several Romance and Slavic areas, Dutch philology, Scandinavian studies, and psycholinguistics.
Doctoral researchers can design a dissertation on any linguistic subject area, from applied linguistics and second language acquisition to topics situated within a specific philology. The programme explicitly welcomes both more theoretical and more practical research questions, as long as the dissertation is grounded in solid empirical work. A key aim is to train students in methods of linguistic data collection and analysis so they can use them critically and reflectively in their own research.
Students receive individual supervision from two faculty members and begin their studies with a written supervision agreement setting out goals and timeframe. The graduate school also emphasises exchange with fellow doctoral students and participation in the everyday research environment of the school. This creates a structured setting for collaborative academic development while still leaving room for individual research interests and future plans.
The programme is based in Münster and is taught in German and English. It is part of a wider support environment at the university, including research training, discussion, career development, and services for international doctoral candidates.
